Layering systems

The secret to always being comfortable outdoors in cold weather is layering. In three easy steps, you can be prepared for all kinds of cold, wet, or windy weather. The first step is a base layer. This is a close-fitting top that keeps warmth close to your body. You can add bottoms too if you're out in very cold weather. Base layers come in several weights and are made with a variety of fibers. Next add a midlayer, usually a fleece or an insulated jacket or vest that also provides warmth. The top layer is a shell, rain jacket, or heavier jacket that is both waterproof and windproof. By layering, as you warm up or as the weather improves, you can shed a layer or sometimes two and still be comfortable. 

 

 

Outerwear for kids

Have a new or very young member of the family? Consider gifting this beloved child with a warm jacket that will keep them toasty even on the coldest days. In these casual days, some of the hiking brands can now be found at work as well as on the trail. An introduction to a new or old favorite brand of quality, comfortable shoes may be just what someone on your list is hoping to receive for the holiday.

 

 

Running shoes

Whole Earth has been a source of high-quality running shoes for many years. You'll find classic brands like Brooks, Salomon, Vibram Five Fingers, and newer brands that are currently leading the pack like Hoka One One and On Inc. A duffel's wide-open interior allows travelers to carry odd-sized items and organize the bag as they choose. The duffel is also a favorite as it can substitute for a pillow while waiting for the next train or flight. They come in assorted sizes and some even have wheels. When Whole Earth opened its doors back in 1970, we stocked books. The same is true today. Our carefully curated collection is particularly strong in books for young children, cookbooks, books on nature and hiking, books to make you laugh, and, of course, books on Texas. One of our favorites for this holiday season is Latinísimo: Home Recipes from the Twenty-One Countries of Latin America by Sandra A. Gutierrez. Give the gift of exploration, not just of a new cuisine but the home cooking of an entire continent in a sturdy and beautifully photographed cookbook!

Love the sound of wind chimes on a gentle breeze or relaxing in a colorful hammock on a sunny day? We do too!
