Founder Girls Movie Night in Austin!

Join Black Outside Inc and Whole Earth on April 8th at 6pm at our store at 1014 North Lamar for a screening and discussion of the film "Founder Girls." The film traces the history of Camp Founder Girls in San Antonio back to its origin in 1924. It was one of the first summer overnight camps for black girls in the country. The film follows the impact the camp has had over the years in building confidence and pride in young black girls that has lasted a lifetime. The event is free but please register here!

In the summer of 2019, Black Outside Inc. proudly resurrected America's first summer overnight camp for black girls. Camp Founder Girls, then known as Camp Elvira, was created by Mrs. Mattie Landry of San Antonio in 1924. The camp was located in Boerne and became a cherished summer destination for black girls for almost 40 years. Today Camp Founder Girls carries on the proud legacy of Mrs. Landry and Founder Girls' past by providing an immersive week-long overnight camp centered on bravery, confidence, creativity, and strength.

Today the camp is open to girls and non-binary youth in 4th to 8th grade. Families pay what they can, on a sliding scale, for girls to attend camp. Black Outside also funds the program through donations to offer scholarships. There will be 160 campers and 60 staff members. Camp registration opens on April 8th.

The film Founder Girls was directed by Contessa Gayles as a part of the Queen Collective Project of Queen Latifa to empower Black women in film. It was first shown on BET network in 2023. The film follows the campers from 2022 as well as former campers who share their memories of summers past. Whole Earth is pleased to bring the film to Austin. To learn more about Camp Founder Girls you can visit their website. We hope to see you on April 6th!
