Daypacks and Destinations for 2021

What do you need to carry? Some folks can carry it all in their pockets, but for most us we need something larger to carry our essentials. We often have a laptop or tablet and other digital devices, plus cords and chargers to bring with us. Some of us wouldn’t consider going anywhere without sunglasses, a water bottle, a notebook and pens, plus a book on the off chance we have time to read a few pages. And if the weather’s uncertain, we want a sweater or rain jacket too. And in the past year, we’ve added face masks and hand sanitizer to the list. For many of us, a daypack is just the right size to hold all the things we need to carry.

At Whole Earth we have a wall full of daypacks for you to choose from, made by some of your favorite brands. We have daypacks for men, women and kids, some minimalist and others loaded with extra features. We use daypacks for school, for work, for travel and for outdoor adventure. Here are a few of the packs you’ll find, among the many, in our stores. One of them may be just what you’re looking for.

Patagonia Chacabuco

Patagonia Women's Chacabuco Backpack 28LWe often get our first daypack when we start school. By the time we’re adults, we’ve had a lot of experience packing and carrying them.  The Patagonia Chacabuco is a versatile pack that’s ready for school during the week and for the daytrips on the weekend.  The interior space is well organized including a padded sleeve for a laptop or tablet, and it’s roomy enough for notebooks, texts and lunch as well! The elastic cord can hold a bicycle helmet or extra layers. On a day hike, the Chacabuco can carry your gear, water, snacks and whatever else you may need, and it’s available in sizes for men and women

One of our favorite day trips here in Texas is visiting a Texas State Park like Enchanted Rock. Climbing the massive granite dome is a treasured memory for generations of Texans.

Fjallraven Kanken Mini

Fjallraven Kanken Mini BackpackIf you’ll be hiking with children on your daytrip, you know they’ll want a pack of their own. Choosing a pack for a child can be tricky as many are far too big for them, and if overloaded, could harm their back. Fjallraven was guided by the Swedish mantra, “Straight backs are happy backs,” when they created the first Kanken in 1978. Simple, stylish and functional, the Kanken Mini is proportioned for small children. Whether they’re traveling, hiking or going to school, kids have things they need to carry too. If your child is ready for a real daypack, one made with quality materials, thoughtfully designed and just their size, consider the Fjallraven Kanken Mini.

And if you have a budding expert on dinosaurs in the family, a trip to Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose might be just the thing. Find the dinosaur footprints and take a hike on one of the many trails in the park.

Thule Chasm

Thule Chasm Backpack 26LHoping to find a daypack with a professional look? May we suggest the Thule Chasm? This sleek pack will look right at home in the office or when traveling. The Chasm is made with durable, water resistant materials. Thule understands just how important easy access to our electronic devices can be. The padded laptop compartment can be speedily reached by a side-zipper or from the top, whichever is more convenient. There’s a handy zippered pocket at the top of the pack for a phone, and a back panel with mesh and lined pockets organized for accessories of all kinds. The Thule Chasm is more than an office pack. It’s adventure ready!

Take it on the trail or take it with you as you explore a new city like San Antonio. It has room for all your travel essentials as you take in the sights along the Riverwalk, the historic Market Square, the Alamo, or the UNESCO World Heritage San Antonio Missions National Historic Park.

CamelBak Rogue Light Hydration PackCamelBak Rogue Light

CamelBak Hydration Packs are used by cyclists and runners who like the ability to get a drink of water on the fly, hands-free! Hikers and festival goers are also partial to hydration packs. CamelBak has come a long way from the day in 1989 when founder Michael Eidson filled an IV bag with water and stuck it in a tube sock, pinned the sock to the back of his shirt, pulled the IV tube over his shoulder, and secured it with a clothes pin. Now CamelBak hydration packs are made of durable, high tech materials that deliver thirst quenching water while bodies are in motion. The Rogue Light is streamlined, lightweight and comfortable and has secured, zippered pockets for keys, a phone and other essentials.

Try out a Rogue Light at Cap Rock Canyons State Park.  Hiking and cycling segments of the 65 mile Trailway, created on the site of an abandoned rail line, would be a perfect place to put a hydration pack to the test.

Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack

Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack 18LThis is the pack that we add to our luggage when traveling or to our pack when backpacking. It weighs four ounces! How do we use it? When traveling we pull it out for hikes and leave the purse behind. It’s also good for shopping or for sightseeing. It can carry a camera, guidebooks, a rain jacket and a water bottle in the side pocket. When backpacking, we can leave the big pack at camp and use the Ultralight Stuff Pack for short hikes or side trips. It may be a lightweight but it’s made with durable 40D nylon ripstock, and it also has lightly padded shoulder straps. There’s one large, double zippered main compartment and a small zippered compartment at the top of the bag. It packs into a built-in storage pocket so it’s easy to carry or to stash in your car.

We’re thinking you might enjoy using this pack on a visit to Austin. Pack it in your luggage and head out for hikes on the Barton Creek Greenbelt, the Balcones Canyonlands to see if you can spot a Golden Cheek Warbler, Wild Basin or Mayfield Park to say hello to the Peacocks. After your hike, visit some of the city’s famous food trailers for tacos and so many other delicious options. You might even find some socially distanced live music!

These are just a few of the daypacks you’ll find at Whole Earth. As you can see, a daypack is a versatile way to carry whatever it is that you need to keep close at hand. Come see us in one of our stores or visit us online and we’ll help you find the right daypack for your needs.
