Cold Weather Robes and Houseshoes
Is it hard to get up on these icy-cold mornings? Seems like everyone would rather stay snuggled down under toasty blankets and comforters than get out of bed. But we’ve found a way to rise and shine despite the chill by having a fleecy robe and a pair of cushy slippers close at hand. Wrapped in warmth, we can face the day.
Some of our favorite robes for both men and women are made by UGG. They’ve mastered the art of keeping our feet warm when we’re outdoors on cold wintery days, so it’s no surprise their robes also have an excellent reputation. This year you’ll find the Duffield II, the Blanche II and the Miranda for women and the Robinson for men in our stores and online.
The Duffield II and the Blanche II are very similar. The Duffield II is a three-quarter length robe while the Blanche II is shorter. Both are made of a double knit of mostly cotton with a touch of elastane that is lined with polyester fleece. These robes have style points like wide plush collars and cuffs, narrow sleeves that hug your arms and keep out the cold, and high low hemlines that reduce the bulky look of so many robes. The pockets and belt loops are on the side seams, and there’s a generous belt. In short, the Duffield II and the Blanche II are warm but won’t weigh you down and have some stretch for extra comfort.
The Miranda is a short robe made of a silky double-face fleece knit. The shawl collar can be worn as a hood for extra warmth. This plush robe also has narrow sleeves that hug your arms and keep out the cold but a straight hemline. The pockets and belt loops are on the side seams and, again, there’s a generous belt. The Miranda is a luxurious lightweight that packs the warmth of a much heavier robe.
The Dude would love the Robinson. Made of a cotton polyester double knit fleece, it’s lightweight jersey on the outside and soft fleece on the inside. The length is above the calf, and the shawl collar shows off the fleece lining. The fit is relaxed, and there are front patch pockets as well as side seam belt loops and a generous belt. The comfort and warmth of the Robinson may inspire envy, so guys be warned: your better half may claim this robe as their own.
A strategically placed pair of slippers by the bed is an excellent way to avoid the shock of our feet coming in direct contact with a frigid wood or tile floor first thing in the morning. With our feet wrapped in fleecy shearling slippers, we can make the move toward the kitchen for our morning coffee or tea ritual. And for those of us working from home, we may not take off our slippers or houseshoes all day unless we’re going outdoors for a walk. No one can see our feet in a Zoom meeting.
If you’ve ever mistakenly tossed a wool sweater in your washing machine, you’ve seen firsthand what hot water, laundry soap and agitation can do to knitted wool. It emerges from the machine shrunken into a dense felt-like material. This is the homemade version of boiled wool. Industrial strength boiled wool is warm, durable and perfect slipper material. Birkenstock and Haflinger use it when making their houseshoes.
The Zermatt provides the comfort and support you’ve come to expect from Birkenstock with some added features as well. The upper is made of felted wool while the footbed is lined with genuine shearling and made from shaped cork and latex which offers more flexibility than a traditional Birkenstock. The sole is covered with non-slip latex so you can move silently and with confidence. And the Zermatt is a slide so it’s easy on and easy off.
Haflinger slippers have been a favorite of Whole Earth customers for many years. The boiled wool uppers, insole and outsole wrap your feet in lightweight breathable woolen goodness. It also has a latex molded arch support so feet are supported as well as warm. The boiled wool outsole is lined with non-skid dots for stability. Haflinger is known for their whimsically decorated houseshoes. This year the Olivia sports a pair of charming owls on a cheery red woolen upper. The Olivia also slips on and off with ease.
Kids like slippers too! Lanner Ridge II slippers have suede uppers lined with faux fleece and removable EVA footbeds that are also fleece lined. These closed-toe slippers slide on and off with minimal fuss and bother. And perhaps most importantly for those of us blessed with daredevil children, the Lanner Ridge II has a rubber outsole that will keep our kids upright on the sharp turns and greatly reduce the frequency of long slides down the hall.
If your feet are like ice on cold winter mornings, the Manawan II may be the answer. By surrounding more of your foot than most slippers do, less of your foot is exposed to the cold. Both the suede upper and the removable molded EVA footbed are lined with a warm wool polyester blend. The rubber gum sole is thick enough for outdoor forays for the mail or firewood while offering a good grip and flexibility.
So guys, if you’re looking for the comfort of houseshoes but you don’t want them to look like slippers, Moloa Slippers were made for you! They look like casual slip-on shoes, but what an outside observer cannot see is the luxuriously soft shearling lining. The waxed nubuck upper has elastic gore panels for a more customized fit. And thanks to the OluKai Drop-In Heel, you can wear them as either a shoe or a slide. The footbed includes a gel insert for extra comfort, and the gum rubber outsoles are quiet, durable and offer a firm footing.
So put an end to those mornings when it’s difficult to leave your nice cozy bed. Wrap yourself in a snug robe and toasty slippers and get a good start on your day. And if it’s now too cool to go barefoot or wear your flips at home during the day, keep your feet comfy with a pair of houseshoes. The holidays will soon be here. Share the warmth with those you love with the gift of a robe and slippers from Whole Earth!
