Buck Wilde’s Adventures with Grizzlies and Wolves
You may remember Buck Wilde from the BBC/Discovery Channel program “The Great Bear Stakeout.” He was the one who “talked down” Van, a 1200 pound, one-eared Grizzly Bear, communicating with a body language cue used among bears. Oh, and he also communicates with Wolves. Buck will be coming to our Houston Shepherd and San Antonio stores at the end of October to share some of his adventures and insights gleaned from years of working as a wildlife behaviorist, photographer and cinematographer.
The Houston Shepherd event features stories about the Pebble Pack, a group of Alaskan coastal Wolves threatened by mining. It will take place on Friday, October 26th at 7 pm.
In San Antonio, Wilde will give a family friendly presentation about a mother Bear and her three cubs learning to coexist with Wolves. It will be held on Saturday, October 27th at 3 pm.
Wilde will also share stories, photos, and videos from his adventures. Light refreshments will be provided for both events.
Buck Wilde is a wildlife behaviorist documenting survival strategies of Bears and Wolves in the Alaskan wilderness where a face-to-face encounter can unfold suddenly. He communicates using body language cues. The same body language can have very different meanings for each species. The body language used to placate the giant Grizzly takes on a different meaning when confronting Wolves who may read it as an invitation to further engagement. Buck’s ability to communicate with wild animals draws on Charles Darwin’s The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals and Dr. Paul Ekman, a pioneer in the study of emotions and their relation to facial expressions, plus 24 years of trial and error in the wilderness.
Buck Wilde is visiting Whole Earth thanks to the good people at KÜHL, makers of high performance outdoor clothing in casual, laidback styles. The company is filled with folks who ski, mountain and road bike, backpack, camp, mountaineer and travel worldwide. Their experiences are directly reflected in the clothing they design. KÜHL clothing is articulated, gusseted, precise and crafted with care to deliver comfort, freedom of movement and quality.
We hope you’ll join us for one of Buck Wilde’s presentations in Houston or San Antonio. It’s a rare opportunity to hear first-hand tales of adventure from wild Alaska.
