Bamboo is the fastest growing tree in the world, growing at a rate of up to one foot every 24 hours. Bamboo can be harvested once a year and grown in the same area indefinitely, so unlike other natural fibers, farmers don’t have to constantly clear more land for the replanting of new shoots of bamboo. Because bamboo fabric doesn’t have to be treated with chemical finishes, not only does bamboo fabric manufacturing prevent the release of dangerous chemicals into our water systems and environment, it also allows water that is used in the factories to be recycled. Approximately 99 percent of all wastewater from bamboo fabric factories can be recovered, treated, and reused in a closed-loop process that helps keep treated water out of the ecosystem.
