Mentally preparing to summit in the Himalayas requires facing the possibilities of altitude sickness, perilous weather and strong winds. For Hilaree O’Neill, “It was worse than I imagined. It was 50 below on the (Everest) Summit.” Undaunted, O’Neill then proceeded to climb Lhotse. In doing so, she joined an elite group of alpinists who possess the endurance to link two 8,000-meter peaks in a single push and became the sole woman to accomplish this feat. Named by Outside Magazine as one of the most adventurous women in sports, she has skied from the 8,000-meter Himalayan summit of Cho Oyu in Tibet, throughout the Andes, on volcanoes in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, and in the tight couloirs of Baffin Island. Through mountain exploration and skiing, Hilaree has truly lived the dream. But she is also the mother of two young boys. The pursuit of personal dreams too often gets sidelined balancing the daily responsibilities of family life. How does she do it? Her advice: “Don’t have an agenda. Focus on what your kids want to do, keep it fun and don’t tie yourself to a schedule.”
