The Big Bend Ultra Run returned to Big Bend National Park on Sunday, January 16, 2011 to the delight of everyone involved. The race included 50K and 25K trail races and introduced a new Rio Grande Village Hot Springs 10K race. Proceeds from the event go to the Trails Fund of the Friends of Big Bend National Park organization. This fund is dedicated to the improvement of trails in the Park.
Almost 300 racers were out in the Park on Sunday, a record for the event. To minimize the impact on the Park, there is a limited number of participants allowed. Runners on the courses enjoyed spectacular sunshine and mild temperatures, taking in the Park’s mountain and desert scenery.
Shown in the photo above is women’s 50K champion, Tanya Hunter, crossing the finish line in 4 hours 28 minutes flat. For full results, photos, and race details, read more at the Big Bend 50 Ultra Run site.
Sponsors for the race include Dr. Stuart Crane, Cavender Toyota, Culligan Southwest, Morrison True Value Hardware, Fleet Feet Sports of San Antonio, and Whole Earth Provision Company.
Race Director Carroll Voss, owner of Fleet Feet in San Antonio, states that “we would like to thank our tremendous volunteers and sponsors for making this race possible. We look forward to seeing everyone back next year.” Truly it was a well-run event in a perfect setting. It will be a tough entry to obtain for the 2012 edition – register early!
