Death in Big Bend
Laurence Parent will be in our store to sign his newest book: Death in Big Bend on September 10th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Mr. Parent is one of the nation’s top landscape photographers and the author of more than three dozen adventure travel guides including a hiking guide to Big Bend National Park. Death in Big Bend chronicles seventeen real life accounts of serious injuries, dramatic rescues and tragic fatalities that have occurred In Big Bend National Park since the early 1980s. The book offers a poignant perspective on the challenges faced by all people living and traveling in the desert frontier.

The Big Bend Ultra Run is coming back this next January! We are happy to have our new store host the folks from the Friends of Big Bend National Park who sponsor the Ultra. On Sunday the 12th of September, they will have a presentation to let you know all the details of the run: information about the courses (50K, 25K, and 10K), training for the desert, camping in Big Bend, and all the fun side trips available while in the Park at the best time of year for a visit. The Ultra Run is to be held January 16, 2011. You can get registration information at the workshop, of course.

Using materials like recycled rubber, polyester, and EVAs and holding stringent business practices is only the tip of the iceberg when speaking to their efforts to remain a leader in environmental responsibility. National Audubon Society
On October 16th we begin a two-week fund raiser and promotion in conjunction with Patagonia Footwear to earn funds for the National Audubon Society’s initiatives around the state of Texas. For every Patagonia shoe sold at any Whole Earth store, Patagonia and 1% For The Planet will donate $10.00 to these Texas programs including the Trinity River Audubon Center in the south part of Dallas. The other programs involved are the Mitchell Lakes Audubon Center in San Antonio and the Coastal Stewardship Program directed at much of the Texas Gulf coast. The fund raising period will last until October 31st. Help us kick off this program on the 16th when the Patagonia Footwear factory rep will be in the store from noon to 4:00 pm.
