San Antonio River Foundation Receives Funds

Over the summer the generous patrons on our Quarry Market store in San Antonio contributed more than $1500 to a great project to improve the San Antonio River. The funds will be used by the San Antonio River Foundation to build trail enhancements, add benches and pavilions, and to create parks along the river through the heart of the city. Big Bend Ultra Run Workshops

Pictured above is Tolbert Greenwood (center, pointing at map). He is a board member of the Friends of Big Bend National Park and is describing the race course for the Ultra races being held in the park this coming January. Holding the other end of the map is George Stone, Whole Earth staff member who discussed the camping situation for competitors in the 10K, 25K, and 50K runs. Big Bend Ultra Marathon workshops in Dallas & Austin

The Big Bend Ultra 2011 has been resurrected after a hiatus of some years. In preparation for the January, 2011 event Whole Earth is hosting a workshop in our Austin Westgate store on September 9th at 6:00 pm. and again on Sunday, September 12th at our new Dallas store in the Preston Forest Center. The workshop will include all the information you’ll need to prepare yourself for this rare opportunity to run in Big Bend National Park next January 16th. Register here for the races: 50K and 25K trail runs plus the Hot Springs 10K race.

Funds Donated to Enchanted Rock

Shown above on the left is Rick Watson, board member of the Friends of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, receiving a check in the amount of $2495.00 from Whole Earth co-owner Joe Jones. The funds were raised during June at Whole Earth stores around the state in conjunction with Chaco Sandals. Chaco generously agreed to donate the funds based on the number of Chacos that were sold during the promotion period. Thanks so much to Chaco and, of course, to all our patrons who purchased a wonderful pair of sandals at Whole Earth. Look for a new interpretive guide to be created and published by the Friends of Enchanted Rock with the funds.

Grand Opening

Whole Earth Provision Company is proud to open our second store in Dallas as of September 1st. Everyone is invited to come have a look at the new location in the Preston Forest Shopping Center located at the intersection of Preston Rd. and Forest Ln. in north Dallas. This weekend will feature in our new store some of the finest names in the outdoor industry. In the area of technical clothing, check in with the folks from Prana, the activewear maker, and Marmot—who also will have their great gear on hand. The we have even more gear from the pros at Osprey Packs and Petzl in house for an afternoon. Rounding out the offering are Salomon shoes and our favorite rep from W.L. Gore & Assoc. On the 24th, have your running gait videoed and analyzed by the Brooks footwear Guru. Pick up a pair of Brooks and $10 of that purchase will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Of course, the opportunity for giveaways is ever present—and you can still contribute to our fundraiser for Audubon Texas by getting a pair of Patagonia shoes through the end of October.

It is almost the end of our Grand Opening Celebration and the Vendor Fairs; but we have saved a good one till now! While the fundraiser for the Trinity River Audubon Center and the National Audubon Society continues (buy a pair of Patagonia shoes and $10 of it goes to these fine conservationists), we will have an expert from Nikon Optics on hand Thursday and Friday. He’ll have an informative presentation concerning choosing and using binoculars. A pair of great Nikon binoculars will be given away each evening!

Death in Big Bend
Laurence Parent will be in our store to sign his newest book: Death in Big Bend on September 10th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Mr. Parent is one of the nation’s top landscape photographers and the author of more than three dozen adventure travel guides including a hiking guide to Big Bend National Park. Death in Big Bend chronicles seventeen real life accounts of serious injuries, dramatic rescues and tragic fatalities that have occurred In Big Bend National Park since the early 1980s. The book offers a poignant perspective on the challenges faced by all people living and traveling in the desert frontier.

Big Bend Ultra Run
The Big Bend Ultra Run is coming back this next January! We are happy to have our new store host the folks from the Friends of Big Bend National Park who sponsor the Ultra. On Sunday the 12th of September, they will have a presentation to let you know all the details of the run: information about the courses (50K, 25K, and 10K), training for the desert, camping in Big Bend, and all the fun side trips available while in the Park at the best time of year for a visit. The Ultra Run is to be held January 16, 2011. You can get registration information at the workshop, of course.

Barefoot running was brought to the masses by this well known company originally known for its durable soles. Designed to provide a healthy alternative to traditional footwear, Vibram Five Fingers allows for natural movement  of the foot. National Audubon Society
On October 16th we begin a two-week fund raiser and promotion in conjunction with Patagonia Footwear to earn funds for the National Audubon Society’s initiatives around the state of Texas. For every Patagonia shoe sold at any Whole Earth store, Patagonia and 1% For The Planet will donate $10.00 to these Texas programs including the Trinity River Audubon Center in the south part of Dallas. The other programs involved are the Mitchell Lakes Audubon Center in San Antonio and the Coastal Stewardship Program  directed at much of the Texas Gulf coast. The fund raising period will last until October 31st. Help us kick off this program on the 16th when the Patagonia Footwear factory rep will be in the store from noon to 4:00 pm.
