Whole Earth’s Dallas volunteers recognized.

Steve Tompkins shows photos of the cleanup effotrs by the 2009 Adopt-a-Shoreline Group of the Year, Whole Earth Provision Co.

The Dallas Whole Earth store has recently been named the Group of the Year award winners for 2009. On a monthly basis a bunch of hardy staff and friends volunteer their time to clean up an adopted section of the shoreline of Dallas White Rock Lake. Congratulations to them all for their service to the community in which they live and work.

Let’s support ‘Trees for Pease’!

Austin’s Friends of Pease Park needs our help:

In 1875 a beautiful, forest gracing the west flank of Lamar Boulevard in central Austin became a city park. General George Custer, Eeyore’s Birthday Party, and multitudes since have used the wonderful acreage to the point where now the Friends of Pease Park say it is “severely underfunded and overused”. The summer of 2009 has further harmed the park with extreme heat, drought, and wind storms. Whole Earth is dedicated to helping raise the funds needed to plant a new generation of shade trees in Pease and to providing an automated irrigation system to serve them. If you love Pease Park like so many of us who have played there over the years, please make a donation to this worthy cause by sending a tax deductible contribution to Austin Parks Foundation, 816 Congress Avenue, Suite 1680, Austin, Texas 78701. Just make your checks payable to the “Friends of Pease Park.”

Another way to contribute is to shop at any of the Austin Whole Earth Provision stores. As you check out at the cash register, just mention to your salesperson that you’d love to donate an additional $1, $5, $10 or more.

Note that on Saturday, November 14th at 10:00 a.m. there will be a huge Fall tree planting put on by Fiends of Pease Park – followed by their Party in the Park which will include refreshments and live music provided by ‘Texico’.

The North Face Speaker Series: Conrad Anker and Jimmy Chin

Whole Earth is proud to participate in The North Face Speaker Series. Alpinists Conrad Anker and Jimmy Chin will share tales of high adventure and extreme endurance in a program called “The Center of the Universe: Teamwork and Tenacity in the Himalaya.”

7:00 pm at Austin’s Zachary Scott Theater on October 26.

For ticket information, visit

Also, Conrad Anker will visit informally with all comers in our Westgate store from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on the day of the main presentation, the 26th of October. This is to be a casual discussion of his exploits.

Saturday, September 26th was National Public Lands Day all over America. The public was invited to visit any National Park that day for free. Many parks at every level from local, neighborhood parks to state parks to the national parks had work projects. Whole Earth in conjunction with Merrell Footwear participated in four of these.

In Dallas we cleaned up debris at White Rock Lake. In San Antonio we joined with a work day at the San Antonio Missions Trail. In Austin we picked up lots of trash at McKinney Falls State Park. And in Houston we participated in several projects in Memorial Park. The photos are starting to roll in of those events –  and of the reception afterwards at a nearby Whole Earth store in which refreshments were enjoyed by the  volunteers and a preview of the Ken Burns PBS series (The National Parks: America’s Best Idea) was shown.

We extend a hearty thanks to anyone and everyone who volunteered that day! You did something very special. Below are photos recording the projects that Whole Earth was involved in.
