Austin-based Green Mountain Energy Co. is expanding into the Texas commercial and industrial market in areas where the energy market has become deregulated, Green Mountain announced Monday.
Austin-based Whole Earth Provision Co. is among the first commercial customers, buying clean energy for its Dallas and Houston locations. Whole Earth Provision Co. bills itself as a specialty retailer selling products to people who share an enthusiasm and commitment to the planet.
Because Austin Energy is city-owned, the utility wasn't required to become deregulated in January 2002, so Whole Earth Provision won't be buying Green Mountain energy for its Austin stores. The Austin locations of Whole Earth Provision Co. are 1014 N. Lamar Blvd., 2410 San Antonio St. and 4477 S. Lamar Blvd. ( Whole Earth Provision Company is a GreenChoice Small Business Partner with Austin Energy. )
Whole Earth Provision Company will purchase energy from Green Mountain for the Dallas and Houston locations through Houston-based CenterPoint Energy Inc. [NYSE: CNP] and Dallas-based TXU Corp. [NYSE: TXU].
Green Mountain sells electricity generated from sources such as wind, solar, water, geothermal, biomass and natural gas to residential, business, institutional and governmental customers.
