Conceived in the spring of 1970 and rooted to the philosophy and concepts published a year earlier in the revolutionary Whole Earth Catalog, Whole Earth Provision Company opened its first store on December 14th in Austin, Texas.
To paraphrase the Whole Earth Catalog:
A realm of intimate personal power is developing–—the power of individuals to conduct their own education, find their own inspiration, shape their own environment, and share the adventure with whoever is interested. Tools that aid this process are sought and promoted by the Whole Earth Catalog.
An item is carried if it is deemed:
1) Useful as a tool
2) Relevant to independent education
3) High quality and/or low cost
4) (and we added) Fun !
The original Whole Earth Provision Company inventory included things like flour mills, massage oils, how-to and travel books, and lightweight camping equipment like tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags.
Over the course of thirty-eight years and the openings of six additional stores across Texas, Whole Earth Provision Company has grown to include extensive shoe and clothing departments for casual and active wear, gear to equip almost any outdoor need, accessories like Swiss Army knives, sunglasses, and compasses, nature oriented gifts like wind chimes, bird feeders, and hammocks, and an unparalleled collection of delightful toys.
With locations in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston, Whole Earth has developed into a truly unique place to shop, to browse, to learn, to have fun.
